Lagos - Town and Beaches

Lagos (pronounced ‘Largosh’) is a tourist town located towards the west of Portugal’s Algarve coast.

The economy of Lagos, in common with most coastal towns in Portugal, has been linked to the sea since ancient times, the fishing industry being an important factor.

In the 1960’s, Lagos began to grew in stature as a tourist resort, not surprising really as it is home to beautiful beaches, good climate, the sea, a scenic coastline including the beautiful Ponta da Piedade (Mercy Point), and a plethora of history, English hero Francis Drake is said to have attacked Lagos.

Lagos boasts a large busy marina and the twisting streets of the town centre are great for absorbing local culture, many local traditions are celebrated, ranging from architecture to gastronomy and handicrafts.

Nightlife is pretty vibrant in the main season and the many restaurants will suit people of all dietary habits.

The many beaches include:

  • Praia da Batata (Potato beach).
  • Praia dos Estudantes (Students’ beach).
  • Dona Ana - Probably the beach most frequented by tourists.
  • Meia Praia (Half beach) - One of the biggest bays in Europe, ideal for water sports.
  • Praia Solaria (Sunny beach).

Getting To Your Algarve Resort

If you have booked your Algarve accommodation separately, or are staying with friends, you will still need to sort out getting to where you are staying.

First and foremost you will most likely require a flight we recommend www.flight.co.uk who trawl through the entire flight schedule to find the best option for you. The Algarve is served by Faro airport and it can be reached from all over the UK.

Once you reach Faro Airport the next leg of your journey begins, you can either hire a car or use a transfer service to your resort.

Click here for car hire from Sky Cars.

For airport to resort transfer we have used ResortHoppa in the past and would certainly recommend to anyone.

One more essential for your Algarve holiday is travel insurance, this can be single or multi trip and covers you for all manner of emergency. Along with travel insurance its wise to get a European Health Insurance Card which is free to UK citizens and entitles you to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment that becomes necessary while you’re in a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland.

Armacao de Pera - Long and Sandy Beaches

Originally this area was occupied by several small shacks, which were used by the inhabitants of nearby Pera to maintain the fishing fleet (the name ‘Armação’ translates as tuna fishing base), therefore much of the town of Armacao de Pera is comprised of holiday apartments, bars and restaurants. The eastern part of the town does however retain some old world charm and character, here you will find excellent fish restaurants and brightly painted boats.

Armação de Pêra is one of the oldest established tourist resorts in the Algarve along with Albufeira which is just down the coast. The long sandy beach stretches for miles along the coast.

During the peak season the Armacao de Pera is brimming with tourists however outside the busiest three months the town is a wonderful peaceful holiday location.

Close to Armacao de Pera is the unspoilt village of Pera which is a typical traditional Moorish hamlet serving as a reminder of the Algarve of yesteryear.
