Monte Gordo – Eastern Algarve and the Spanish border

Monte Gordo is the most easterly tourist resort on the Algarve, just 3 km away from the town Vila Real de Santo António and the Spanish border.

The village still maintains its traditional roots as a fishing village, however the town has developed considerably as a holiday destination in recent years,and the two industries co-habit amicably.

Monte Gordo boasts a glittering casino with a features a modern gaming room and a nightly floorshows.

For sun worshiper’s Monte Gordo Bay is the largest beach in the Algarve, stretching as far as the eye can see.

2 miles to the east of Monte Gordo, the River Guadiana flows into the Atlantic Ocean this river has formed a natural frontier for over two millennium.

Treat yourself to a river cruise and lap up a taste of the tranquility to be found in this part of Portugal.

Just to the north of Monte Gordo is Castro Marim, the first headquarters of the Military Order of Christ, heirs to the Templars in Portugal. Looking across the Guadiana to Spain, the sandstone walls of its medieval castle enclose the ruins of an even older castle.
